He explained the decision by saying that locations without any historic significance will have their names changed gradually. He stated, for instance, that Kalapahar is not historically significant. In the same vein, Karimganj is also meaningless. Assamese and Bengali dictionaries do not define Karimganj. We renamed it since the word Sribhumi has a meaning. The process of renaming the locations is happening bit by bit.
In a social media post, the Chief Minister stated that the action will also honour Rabindranath Tagore, who had designated this area as Sribhumi of undivided India. Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore referred to the present-day Karimganj District in Assam as “Sribhumi,” or the land of Maa Lakshmi, more than a century ago, the post stated. “The Assam Cabinet has fulfilled this long-standing demand of our people today,” it continued. Notably, the chief minister of Assam also discussed a number of important choices made at today’s cabinet meeting.
