The first consignment of Telangana’s GI-tagged Tandur Redgram(Toor dal) has been exported to Australia, with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitating the shipment. The consignment, weighing 2.5 metric tonnes, was flagged off from Hyderabad on 28 October 2026.

The consignment comprises 2.5 metric tonnes (MT) of GI-tagged Tandur Redgram, exported by M/s. Durga Exports and Imports, Hyderabad, under the brand name AMMAAS. The consignment is being shipped to Australia by sea and imported by M/s. Bharathma PTY Ltd., Australia.

The exporter is registered with APEDA and is engaged in the export of rice, pulses, spices and groceries from Telangana.

This shipment marks an important milestone in promoting Telangana’s distinctive agricultural produce in international markets.

Tandur Redgram: Telangana’s Unique GI-Tagged Agricultural Product

Tandur Redgram (Toor Dal) is the first agricultural product from Telangana to receive Geographical Indication (GI) registration. It is primarily cultivated in the rainfed tracts of four mandals in the Tandur region namely Tandur, Basheerabad, Peddemul and Yelal.

The distinctive characteristics of Tandur Redgram are associated with the region’s fertile deep black soils, the presence of attapulgite clay mineral deposits, and substantial limestone deposits.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar welcomed the development, describing it as a proud moment for Telangana. In a post on X, he said the export of GI-tagged Tandur Redgram to Australia, facilitated by APEDA under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, reflected how Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership was taking the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative forward by connecting farmers’ produce with global markets.

Tandur Redgram contains approximately 22–24% protein, nearly three times the protein content of cereals. It is valued for its excellent taste, superior cooking quality, and enhanced keeping quality. Its GI identity offers an opportunity to strengthen product recognition, improve market visibility, and generate greater value through access to domestic and international markets.

The export shipment to Australia represents a significant step towards exploring new overseas markets for this distinctive agricultural product and expanding opportunities for farmers, producers, and exporters.

The event was attended by Dr. Sampath Kumar, ITS, Additional Director General of Foreign Trade, Regional Authority, Hyderabad; Mr. Sumanth R., exporter representing M/s. Durga Exports and Imports, Hyderabad; and other APEDA officials.
