BHAGALPUR: The Town Hall in Bhagalpur witnessed a powerful blend of patriotism, cultural heritage and national consciousness as the grand theatrical production ‘Yug Pravartak Dr Hedgewar’ was staged to mark the centenary year of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The programme was organised under the aegis of the Bihar Government’s Department of Art and Culture.

The play traced the inspiring life of Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the founder and Adi-Sarsanghchalak of the RSS, highlighting his role in Bharat’s freedom movement, his vision of national reconstruction and the historic journey of the Sangh. The performance marked the 68th special staging of the production across the country.

A 40-member team from Nadabrahma, a renowned cultural organisation based in Nagpur, brought the story to life through powerful acting and compelling dialogues. Satish Khekale portrayed Dr Hedgewar, while Amol Telpande played Madhavrao Sadashivrao Golwalkar, (Shri Guruji), the second Sarsanghchalak of the RSS.

The programme began with the complete rendition of Vande Mataram, setting a patriotic tone for the evening.

The event was formally inaugurated by Jagadguru Ramanujacharya Swami Agamanand Ji Maharaj, Peethadheeshwar of Shri Shivshakti Yog Peeth in Naugachia and successor to Shri Uttar Totadri Math, Vibhishankund, Ayodhya. He lit the ceremonial lamp in the presence of Bihar’s Road Construction Minister, Engineer Kumar Shailendra; Bhagalpur Mayor Dr Vasundhara Lal; MLAs Rohit Pandey, Murari Paswan, Mithun Yadav and Puran Lal Tudu; and senior RSS functionaries.

Those present on the dais included Naresh Mohan Jha, Bhagalpur Vibhag Sanghchalak; Dr Rana Pratap Singh, Vibhag Sah Sanghchalak; Dr Chandrashekhar Sah, Mahanagar Sanghchalak; and Balmukund Gupta, Sah Karyavah of the RSS’s South Bihar province.
Addressing the gathering, Swami Agamanand Ji Maharaj recalled Swami Vivekananda’s call, “Garv se kaho hum Hindu hai,” and highlighted the importance of Hindu cultural pride, national service and the ideals associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

He said the RSS had played a significant role in preserving the spirit of service towards Hindu society, culture and the nation. He also noted that Dr Hedgewar and Shri Guruji had dedicated their lives to the service of the nation.

The play transported the audience to the 1920s and 1930s through stirring dialogues and scenes depicting the ideological foundations of the Sangh and Dr Hedgewar’s commitment to complete independence for India.

The production portrayed Dr Hedgewar’s engagement with the freedom movement and his emphasis on building a disciplined organisation dedicated to national regeneration. It depicted the founding of the RSS on Vijayadashami in 1925, the naming of the organisation, the development of the shakha system, the cleaning of the Sangh premises, the first Guru Purnima celebration, the announcement of the Sarsanghchalak and the organisation of Sangh Shiksha Vargs.

The play also presented discussions reflecting the influence of Lokmanya Tilak’s philosophy of action, Sri Aurobindo’s spiritual nationalism, Veer Savarkar’s uncompromising patriotism and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s approach to the freedom struggle.

One of the most moving sequences depicted Dr Hedgewar’s declining health and his decision to entrust Shri Guruji with responsibility during a Sangh training camp. The scene, portraying the transition and the continuation of the Sangh’s mission, deeply moved the audience.

The Town Hall resonated with slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram”, reflecting the patriotic spirit of the occasion.

Appreciating the artistes, he said their powerful presentation deserved praise, adding that they had brought every scene vividly to life on stage.

He also highlighted the historical contributions of the all six Sarsanghchalaks of the RSS, observing that although their approaches and methods of functioning differed according to the needs of their respective times, their fundamental objective remained the same: the glory of Bharat Mata and the preservation of Sanatan culture.

Emphasising the relationship between cultural identity and national consciousness, he said the enduring idea that “Hindutva is national identity” needed to be understood more deeply in contemporary times.

The performance drew an enthusiastic response from the people of Bhagalpur. Every seat inside the Town Hall was occupied, while spectators filled the galleries. An LED screen was installed outside the venue to enable hundreds of additional people to watch the production.

The play was written by Dr Ajay Pradhan, the production was produced by Padmakar Dhanorkar, directed by Subodh Surjikar and featured music composed by Shailesh Dani.

The programme was conducted by Ajit Ghosh, Vibhag Prachar Pramukh, while Neeraj Shukla, head of the organising committee, delivered the vote of thanks.

Several functionaries and volunteers associated with the RSS, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Swadeshi Jagran Manch, Vidya Bharati, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Shri Shivshakti Yog Peeth also attended the event.
