
Bhubansahar Kachari: A century-old Mandir in southern Bangladesh was attacked, and its murti vandalised in Patuakhali district, triggering concern among local residents and prompting a police investigation.
The incident took place at the Southineshwar Kali Mandir in Bauphal Upazila of Patuakhali around 9:30 pm on February 28. The Mandir is located in Bhubansahar Kachari under Ward No. 2 of Sadar Union.
According to Mandir authorities, a group of unidentified individuals entered the premises under the cover of darkness and carried out the vandalism. During the attack, a Kali murti inside the Mandir was damaged. The assailants fled the scene soon after the incident.
Local residents said the Mandir, which is over 100 years old, holds significant religious and cultural importance for the Hindu community in the area. The act of vandalism has caused distress among devotees and villagers, who described the incident as unfortunate and unexpected.
Police launch investigation, CID team to conduct forensic testsFollowing the attack, officers from Bauphal Police Station visited and inspected the site. Law enforcement officials documented the damage and initiated an investigation to identify those involved. Police have assured residents that necessary measures will be taken to address the situation and maintain law and order.
Authorities further stated that a specialist team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will examine the Mandir premises. The team is expected to conduct forensic tests to gather evidence that could help trace the perpetrators. Officials indicated that subsequent legal steps will be taken based on the findings and guidance from senior authorities.
Speaking on the matter, Officer-in-Charge of Bauphal Police Station, Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman, confirmed the damage and ongoing probe. “We have inspected the site. One Kali murti has been damaged. The matter is under investigation and legal action is being taken,” he said.
