Odisha: Cow protection activists intercept beef-laden container of five tons in Cuttack; Road blockade follows

Cuttack: In a significant development from Odisha, members of a cow protection group intercepted a container transporting beef in Cuttack district and later handed it over to the police. The incident, which took place in the Tigiria area, triggered tensions at the site and led to a road blockade by agitated locals protesting against alleged administrative inaction.

According to local sources, cow smugglers are increasingly adopting innovative methods to transport prohibited meat. In this case, the consignment was carried in a temperature-controlled (air-conditioned) container, with meat packets carefully packed and concealed. Acting on specific intelligence, cow protection activists attempted to stop the vehicle on April 2. However, the driver refused to halt and sped away, prompting the activists to pursue the container.

After a chase, the vigilantes intercepted the vehicle near Bindhanima Bypass, in front of a Hanuman temple under the jurisdiction of Tigiria police station. The interception led to a tense situation between the activists and the individuals transporting the meat. Two persons associated with the vehicle were detained at the scene before being handed over to the police along with the container.

Sources indicated that the activists had prior information about a truck carrying beef from the Narsinghpur area. They initially attempted to stop the vehicle in the Badamba police station area, but the driver managed to evade them. The activists then continued the chase and eventually succeeded in stopping the vehicle along State Highway No. 65 near the temple.

Upon inspection, authorities and activists reportedly found meat packed in small paper packets inside the container. Preliminary estimates suggest that more than five tons of meat were being transported. The discovery intensified tensions in the area, as local residents gathered at the scene. Some individuals allegedly vandalised the truck before police intervened to bring the situation under control.

Local residents expressed anger over what they described as the administration’s failure to curb illegal cattle and meat smuggling. Accusing the authorities of inaction, protesters staged a road blockade that lasted for a considerable period, causing significant inconvenience to commuters, especially amid intense heat, with hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the road.

Police from Tigiria station took custody of the container and arrested the driver and his assistant. Initial findings suggest that the consignment was being transported from Narsinghpur to Kolkata. However, the detained individuals have reportedly claimed that the meat in question was not beef but chicken.

In response to the conflicting claims, authorities have initiated a formal probe. The seized meat has been secured in the container under police supervision in a nearby forested area. Samples have been collected and sent to the State Forensic Laboratory for analysis to determine the exact nature of the meat.

Senior officials, including Tehsildar Dharma Ranjan Panda, Additional Tehsildar Gangadhar Nayak, Additional Rural SP Pradeep Sahu, and SDPO Biswajit Mohanty, were present during the handling of the seized consignment. Officials have stated that further action will be based on the forensic report.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about illegal cattle trade, the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in regulating such activities, and the growing involvement of vigilante groups in enforcement actions.
